We have seen a couple of different versions of play tables either made from scratch (PB kids knock offs) or made from pieces bought from Ikea and hacked. We chose to do an Ikea hack. It wasn’t very expensive compared to what it COULD have cost to buy something.
We used:
- 2 Trofast frames in white (base)-$79.98 for both
- 1/2 sheet of 3/4 inch MDF-about $22 for the full sheet
- 10 small Trofast boxes-$30
- 4 medium Trofast boxes-$16
- Connecting nuts, 1 bag of 4-$4.72
- Connecting bolts, 1 bag of 4-$3..53
- wood glue (had)
- nails (had)
Follow the instructions on putting the Trofast frames together.
After assembling both frames push them together to form one large table.
Using the connecting hardware connect the two units together.
You will need to flip both units over in order to connect the bottoms. Use 2 connectors on the top and 2 on the bottom.
Cut your MDF top with some hang over on each side (we used 2 inches on the long side where the boxes slide in and out and 1 inch on the short side). Cut strips to MDF to use as a frame under the bottom of the table top to keep it from sliding off the Trofast units. Glue and nail the strips underneath the table top.
(table top upside down to show frame)
Put the table top on the unit and you are done!
Our boys LOVE this table. They can play with their Lego’s, trains, cars, etc. and it’s at the perfect height for them!
We spent less than $150 making this play table and it is VERY sturdy. Lesser quality tables with less storage cost at least that much but usually a lot more.
Have a great week!

Very cool, I'm sure my kids would love a nice table like this to spread out all their craziness on! ~Jen @ www.icantstopcrafting.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I love all of the storage that this provides!
ReplyDeleteI love organized storage and this is perfect. Plus all the top space for the kids to play on. Seems like 150.00 is a good price for such a sturdy piece.
